Playing Above the City Skyline: Kindergarten Playground on a Rooftop

Playing Above the City Skyline

What happens when there is no room left on the ground? In many cities, rooftops are becoming the next generation of play spaces.

But rooftop playgrounds require far more than standard solutions. From load-bearing capacity and installation methods to safety concepts, every project demands a tailored approach.

Learn how HUCK develops customized rooftop playground solutions together with architects, planners and developers.

When open space becomes scarce, creative solutions are required. A recent project demonstrates how new spaces for movement and play can be created where they might not be expected at first glance: on top of a building.

This kindergarten playground is located on the flat roof of a former office complex on the 4th floor, which has been completely redeveloped. The project highlights a trend that is becoming increasingly important, particularly in urban environments. As cities continue to densify, rooftops are more frequently being transformed into spaces for recreation, movement and play.

Every Rooftop Has Its Own Requirements

Rooftop playgrounds differ significantly from conventional ground-level installations. Numerous technical requirements must be considered from the very beginning of the planning process.

One of the key factors is the building's load-bearing capacity. Based on this, the entire surfacing system is designed and the selection of playground equipment is determined.

Another important consideration is the roof membrane itself. It must not be subjected to mechanical stress under any circumstances. Drilling or welding is generally prohibited, as it can create excessive point loads or damage the roof structure. As a result, every installation becomes a unique planning challenge.

Taking a Holistic Approach to Safety

In addition to the playground equipment, the overall safety concept must also be carefully considered. On rooftop installations, fall protection and securing the play area are particularly important.

For this project, a custom-designed ball-stop and safety net system was integrated into the overall concept. The net system was specifically adapted to the site's requirements and forms an essential part of the playground's safety strategy.

Experience as a Key Success Factor

HUCK has successfully realized numerous rooftop playgrounds and play areas on top of underground parking structures. The experience gained from these projects is incorporated from the earliest planning stages and helps identify and address technical challenges before they arise.

Working closely with architects, planners and developers, we create solutions that combine safety, durability and play value.

Because successful play spaces are rarely off-the-shelf solutions – they are the result of experience, expertise and carefully adapted planning.
